Shirley hails from rural Upstate New York, where she grew up making snow angels, picking Golden Delicious apples, and watching black-and-white Hollywood classics on broadcast TV. She took her first acting class at HB Studio in New York City when she was 15 years old. Shirley studied art history, dance, and filmmaking at New York University and screenwriting at UCLA.
